Measuring Guide

How to measure your curtains

Measuring curtains is easy, all you need to do is follow the simple step-by-step guide below and off you go! You will not need to do any calculations yourself, we will do it all for you.

Eyelet, Pencil Pleat & Pinch Pleat Curtains

Step 1: Measuring the width of the curtain

Measure either your curtain track or pole NOT the window width. Please ensure the measurement provided is correct as this figure will be used to calculate the amount of fabric required. If you are fitting a new track or pole, this should extend 15cm to 20cm both sides of the window and at least 15cm above it.

Curtain Tracks:

Measure along the top of the track from end to end and this is the width you need to enter for your curtain.

Curtain Pole:

Measure only the pole length and not the finials. This is the width you need to enter for your curtain.

Top Tip: For your curtains to look perfect, your track and pole should be 15-20cm above your window and stretch 15-20cm wider than the window each side.

Step 2: Measuring the curtain drop

Curtains can be hung in different ways, above the sill, below the sill or floor length. We suggest the following:

  • Above the sill – 1.5cm
  • Below the sill – 15-20cm (or 2-3cm above radiator)
  • Floor length – 1.5cm above the floor

Top Tip: Ensure you allow a small amount of space at the bottom of the curtains. This prevents the curtains from getting damaged and fraying.

Step 3: Choose your heading

Eyelet pole

Eyelets – Measure from the top of the pole to where you would like the curtain to finish at the bottom. NOTE: Our eyelet headed curtains only fit on poles with a 30mm diameter.

Pencil & Pinch Pleat (Pole Heading) – Measure from the underside of the decorative ring to your chosen end point of the curtain.

If you want the pole and rings to be hidden by the curtains, measure from the top of the decorative ring instead.

Pencil & Pinch Pleat (Track Heading) – Measure from the top of the track to your chosen end point of the curtain.

Top Tip: Windowsills and floors can be uneven, so ensure you measure 2 or 3 different points of the curtain, use the smallest measurement as your drop. Make sure you retake the measurements just to make sure they are correct.
